Before you start
A well-applied sticker looks like part of the car and lasts a long time, while a poorly applied one bubbles or falls off. The good news: you only need a few simple things and a little patience. Below are the steps that work for most vinyl stickers, including plotter-cut stickers with transfer film.
What you need
- car shampoo, water and a microfibre cloth,
- isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or another paint degreaser,
- masking tape and a tape measure or spirit level,
- a plastic squeegee or an old plastic card wrapped in a soft cloth,
- scissors.
Weather and temperature
Sticker adhesive works best at a moderate temperature. When it is too cold the adhesive grips poorly, and when it is too hot the film gets soft and is hard to position. It is best to apply in a dry, windless place: in a garage or in the shade.
- ideal: about 15–25 °C (for both the air and the paint),
- acceptable: 10–15 °C and 25–30 °C – work more slowly and carefully,
- better to postpone: below 10 °C and on hot metal in direct sun.
These are general recommendations for vinyl stickers. The exact requirements of each product are given in the offer description.
Preparing the surface
- Wash the area with shampoo, rinse with clean water and dry it thoroughly.
- Degrease the surface with isopropyl alcohol or a paint-safe cleaner. Wax, polish and silicone reduce adhesion.
- Check the paint: do not apply to loose, flaking paint or to rust. After fresh paintwork, wait a few weeks until the paint has fully cured.
- Measure the spot and mark it with masking tape.
Stickers are best applied to smooth, flat surfaces. Some designs also suit textured surfaces – check the offer description.
Applying step by step
- Hold the sticker (on its backing paper, under the transfer film) in place and fix it along the top with masking tape like a hinge.
- Fold the sticker back and carefully peel off the backing paper. The design stays on the transfer film. Do not touch the adhesive with your fingers.
- Lower the sticker onto the surface and press with a squeegee from the centre outwards in successive strokes – this pushes the air out.
- Wait a moment, then peel off the transfer film slowly, folding it back flat close to the surface rather than at a right angle.
- If the sticker comes away together with the transfer film: stop peeling, lay the film back and press it down with the squeegee. Wait a moment, then peel the film off at a larger angle. Gently warming the surface with a hairdryer can also help – warm air, not hot.
- Smooth small bubbles out with the squeegee; prick larger ones with a thin needle and press down.
Printed stickers (for example “Learner driver”) may not have a transfer film – in that case skip the steps about peeling off the film. Details are given in the offer description.
After applying
- do not wash the car for the first 2–3 days and, if possible, protect the sticker from rain,
- do not aim a pressure washer jet at the edges of the sticker,
- do not scrub the sticker with a brush or a rough sponge.
Most common mistakes
- a dirty or greasy surface,
- applying in the cold or in direct sun,
- rushing when peeling the transfer film,
- touching the adhesive with your fingers,
- not marking the spot with tape – the sticker ends up crooked.
Removing a sticker
When a sticker has to leave the car, warm it gently with hot air from a hairdryer and peel it off slowly at a sharp angle. Remove adhesive residue with a paint-safe product. Test it on a hidden spot first.
